Laminate Floor Repair: Which Repair Kit Do You Need?

Quick answer: Most laminate floor repairs don't need a new floor. Gaps between boards, hollow or bouncy boards and squeaky joints can usually be fixed in place, without lifting the floor, if you match the repair to the cause. The right laminate floor repair kit depends on the problem, so start by working out which one you have.

Which laminate floor repair do you need?

Problem What usually causes it The fix
Gaps opening between boards Planks creeping apart as the floor moves with the seasons Pull the planks back together with Plank Grabber
Gaps that keep coming back The joint has worn or keeps being pushed open Close the gap, then bond the joint with Injectafix where the flooring manufacturer permits it: Permanent Fix Pack
Hollow, bouncy or clicking boards A void or dip in the subfloor beneath the board Inject Injectafix through a small hole to support the board
Squeaking or creaking joints Friction in the click-lock joints Test first with the Squeaky Floor Test Kit, then treat with Click Lube or Groove Gasket
Chips, scratches or burns in the surface Surface damage to the décor layer A colour-matched laminate filler or wax repair kit. We don't make one, so check your flooring manufacturer's recommendation.
Swollen, water-damaged or broken boards Water getting into the core of the board Replace the damaged boards. No repair kit will flatten swollen laminate.

How to fix gaps in a laminate floor

  1. Clean the plank surface so the suction pad can grip.
  2. Press Plank Grabber onto the plank next to the gap.
  3. Tap the strike point with a rubber mallet to slide the plank back into place.
  4. Work along the row until the gap is closed.

The planks must be able to move. Plank Grabber won't close gaps in boards that are glued or nailed down, and it needs a clean, sealed surface to grip. Always keep the expansion gap around the edge of the room open. Full guide: how to fix gaps in laminate flooring.

How to fix a hollow or bouncy laminate board

If a board dips or clicks when you stand on it, there is usually a void beneath it. Injectafix is a low-viscosity, self-levelling adhesive that you inject through a small hole in the joint. It flows into the void and supports the board from below, without lifting the floor. Weight the area and leave it for 24 hours. Check the flooring manufacturer's guidance first, and don't bond a floating floor to its subfloor across the room.

How to fix a squeaky laminate floor

Squeaks in click laminate usually come from the joints rubbing together. Use the Squeaky Floor Test Kit on two small areas to find out whether the noise is in the locking profile or along the top bevel, then treat the whole area with the product that worked. What's in a good laminate floor repair kit?

Buy for the problem you have rather than a generic kit. For gaps, the Plank Grabber packs range from the tool on its own to bundles with a mallet, Injectafix and Click Lube. For squeaks, start with the test kit. Keep some Perfect Finish Wipes handy to clean up excess adhesive as you go.

When to replace boards instead

  • The board is swollen, delaminated or broken.
  • The locking edges are damaged and won't hold.
  • The subfloor is soft, rotten or wet.

Frequently asked questions

Can you repair laminate flooring without replacing it?

Often, yes. Gaps, hollow boards and squeaky joints can usually be fixed in place. Swollen or broken boards need replacing.

Can I glue laminate flooring joints?

Only where the flooring manufacturer permits joint bonding. Never glue a floating floor down to its subfloor.

Does Plank Grabber work on LVT as well as laminate?

Yes. It grips clean, sealed surfaces, including textured laminate and LVT, as long as the planks can move.
